The Rantcor Pit #29 - Ships of the Line

From the earliest Flash Gordon serials to the biggest science fiction blockbusters of today, if you want to tell a story set in or involving outer space then you had better have some memorable space-faring craft!

Among the many strengths of the Star Wars saga is how it delivers on that very necessity with near perfection.  Eschewing the rocket ships and streamlined spacecraft of traditional cinematic space adventures, from the outset Star Wars had brought some of the most unique and memorable intergalactic vessels in film history to bear.

Minutes into A New Hope audiences were introduced to that galaxy far, far away in the most dynamic way possible.  And from that moment on, everything we knew about getting from Point A to Point B in space changed forever!

This is certainly a facet of  Star Wars that your hosts Cole "JediCole" Houston and Eddie Medina are silly for in so many ways.  Seeking a topic for this weeks show it seemed only natural to talk up the variety and necessity of the various spacecraft of Star Wars as well as their portrayal on screen.  So strap yourselves in and get ready for the jump not into hyperspace so much as into every aspect of interstellar conveyance that "the Star Wars" has to offer!

Hey Kids, Comics! #120 - Occident Express

I say, old chap!  It would appear that those Yanks from “Hey Kids, Comics!” are planning an excrursion across the pond this week!

Indeed hosts Andrew Farmer and Cole Houston have set their sights on Europe and its place in comics, especially those with super-beings involved.  From Captain Britain’s early days teaming up with America’s own Spider-Man to Europe getting a Justice League of their own and beyond, there is plenty to explore in this country-hopping issue.

Join your intrepid "Occidental tourists" on an excursion into distant lands and their place in comics.  Real and fictional countries and the role that World War II played in bringing Europe home to American readers are on the itinerary.

The Rantcor Pit Live #20 - So Close Yet So Far, Far Away...

2015 is a magic number.  Well, for Star Wars it is, at least from the standpoint of being the year in which that galaxy far, far away will again be thrust into the public consciousness in a huge way.  Even more so in that this is the year that is only the beginning of a steady stream of Star Wars movies, television shows, and merchandise.

JediCole both celebrates this (as a life-long fan) and laments it (as a collector) along with his co-host Eddie Medina as they explore what's in store for Star Wars as the year goes forward.

This time they are joined by Vegabomber (of The JediCole Universe's own "Do It Yourself" podcast to talk up the new year and all things Star Wars that we fans have to look forward to down the line.  From toys to literature to, of course, the movie!

Hey Kids, Comics! #119 - Take This Cape and Shove It!

WE QUIT!

Nahhhhhhh...we can't quit you!  But when it comes to comics, especially super-hero comics, quitting just comes with the job.  How often have your favorite heroes left in a huff only to return anew to the one thing they were born to do with their lives?

From abandoning a persona or costume to departing the team to just plain leaving the game for good, the phenomenon of "super-quitting" seems to run rampant in comics.  No one can truly fathom why, especially since it seems everyone is quitting, usually only to come back again.  Between dying and quitting it is amazing any super-heroes get anything done!

Andrew Farmer and Cole Houston can't quit talking about the Super-Quitters Club in this episode.  Why do heroes quit?  Why do they get to come back when they damn well feel like it?  Why is it so hard to find a super-hero who has never quit?

Quit asking such questions and give this episode a listen today!

The Rantcor Pit #28 - From One End of This Galaxy to the Other Episode 3: Another Universe

After a lengthy absence due to the holidays (seriously, from Life Day to New Year's Day it gets pretty hectic here at The Rantcor Pit) Cole Houston and Eddie Medina are back to bring you the final chapter of From One End of This Galaxy to the Other.

Collectibles become a huge part of many a Star Wars fan's life to varying degrees.  In this trilogy the purpose was to highlight some of the varied collectibles that can be found beyond the obvious.  In this case collectibles from foreign lands.  There really is just something uniquely appealing to U.S. collectors about packaging and language variations as well as things you just can't find at home.

Your hosts are joined yet again by Warren Jacobsen who lends his knowledge and experience with overseas collecting to the proceedings.  Learn about the Tri-Logo vintage toys, Japanese collectibles made from nearly every possible material, and even a uniquely Brazilian release.  From the collector coins distributed at Celebration Japan and Celebration Europe to Japanese Pepsi collectibles to a curious little pencil sharpener, countries around the world have offered a rich variety of finds for the adventurous collector out there.

Even bootlegs and knock-offs make the cut!

Hey Kids, Comics! #118 - My Favorite Comics Year (Until 2015)

Greetings and happy New Year from the Hey Kids, Comics floor of the JCU!

As the ball had dropped and another year has crept up on us like some kind of tow haired, top-hat and sash wearing baby with disproportionately colossal ears ears, we determined to take one last stab at the last 365 days in comic books.

NOT Hey Kids, Comics!'s Andrew Farmer

Join your hosts Andrew Farmer and Cole Houston, along with special guest Jeremi Eldridge, as they tackle the good and the bad of 2014 while looking forward to all that 2015 promises to bring to bear.  Nothing is off limits this time, as Milo Manara, comic conventions, set-in-their-ways creators, and more get their turns in the hot seat.

Was 2014 a better year for for gender equality than those gone by?  Is 2015 the year of Star Wars or simpley that of the Star Wars variant cover?  Is DC/Warner ever gong get it together when it comes to their cinematic universe?  WHAT THE HELL IS KATHY BATES' ACCENT IN AMERICAN HORROR STORY FREAK SHOW!?!?

All this, and so much more, in this issue of Hey Kids, Comics

The Rantcor Pit Live #19 - The Vader Situation

What is up with Darth Vader?

That is the question posed by this week's live show guest, Jason McLean has posed.

Could it be that the Dark Lord of the Sith is purposefully or inadvertently the weak link in the chain of Palpatine's grand scheme?   This is certainly a bold accusation, yet when your hosts Cole Houston and Eddie Medina join in to explore this odd possibility, there seems to be a strong case against the Emperor's personal enforcer that comes to light.

Check out the archive of Sunday, December 28th's The Rantcor Pit Live to discover for yourself if Darth Vader is not the villain he is all cracked up to be in reality.

Trilogy, Interrupted (or What Ever Happened to the Third Chapter of "The Rantcor Pit - One End of This Galaxy to the Other"?

JediCole here with an apology for the long delay in getting the final chapter of One End of This Galaxy to the Other (also known as The Rantcor Pit #28) out on the JCU site.

The holidays have really tied up Eddie and myself as well as our ideal guests for this chapter of our first trilogy.  After careful consideration we have determined to get through this week and start fresh in the new year with the long overdue episode on the international impact of Star Wars collecting.

The Rantcor Pit Live will still have one more episode this year from Deep Ellum on Air on which we will bid a fond farewell to 2014 and look forward to 2015 and the beginning of a Golden Age of Star Wars films!  Thank you for your patience and understanding as time with family and friends during this season keep us away from our mics and our show.

Hey Kids, Comics! #117 - The End of the World

Game over man!  Game over!

There are times when the end is nigh and times when the end is nigh impossible to deny.  In comics, raging against the dying of the light tends to bring a new and unexpected dawn.  After all, is this not the realm of death as more a vacation than a final destination?

Well, enough waxing poetic.  This week's triumphant return of Hey Kids, Comics! finds your hosts Andrew Farmer and Cole Houston at the end of the world.  Or the end of the universe, reality, This or that dimension, or all of creation.  The alarming regularity with which everything is destined to be destroyed for all time in comics is somewhat overwhelming!

Join your hosts as they explore the nature of world-ending scenarios and their impact on the greater universes they threaten.  Are the effects felt for all time or simply shrugged off like a bad day at the office?  Well that varies from Armageddon to Armageddon, but that is a story you will have to listen to the show to discover for yourself.

And you had better hurry because you never know when tomorrow is never going to come again!

The Rantcor Pit Live #18 - All I Want For Christmas

If you missed us on Deep Ellum on Air on Sunday, December 14, 2014 this is your big chance to catch up on what your hosts Cole Houston and Eddie Medina got up to on the latest The Rantcor Pit Live.

So grab your stockings and wrapping paper and get ready to find out what your favorite Star Wars guys have picked out for those on Santa's (or Yoda's) "Nice List"!

Hey Kids Comics Holiday Hoedown!

Hey There Fearless Flyers of the Internet Radio Waves!

In light of the impending holiday, Hey Kids, Comics! is going to be taking a week off.  Instead of a new show, I thought we would address a question that we receive often out at the HKC mobile, subarctic, extraterrainial, recording studio.  We had gotten a great many inquiries as to what our favorite shows are.  We will be handling that question today, as the requisite forms have been signed in triplicate. Here are some of our recent picks.  Let's start where we most often don't, at the first pick.

Hey Kids, Comics! #81 - Cryptids and Comics: The Lost Issue

This was an incredibly fun show to do.  We didn't have time to plan out what we actually wanted to do, but those always turn out the best.  The idea of doing a pseudo radio drama came to us about 20 minutes before the recording started, and we had to mesh all these ideas into a show with nothing more than the idea of what we wanted it to be.  Eddie and Colleen came through big time, and that just proves what we always say here...never underestimate the improv skills of a paranormal investigator!  The 11:59th hour addition of the secret cameo was really the icing on the cake.  It was a great topic, made greater by a group idea that came all the way through!

Hey Kids, Comics! #66 - Hey Comics! What's For Supper?!

One of the things that we really like to do at Hey Kids, Comics! is to attempt to test or "stump" each other.  When choosing topics, we usually have have a few that we think just can't be done; that no matter how much research we do, or how creative we are, there is no way that we can pull an hour out of that idea.  Invariably, we end up with a show that we both adore, and #66 is among the favorites of our stumpers.  The addition of our old friend and podmate, Rick Gutierrez, made it all the better.  You can check out his show (that both Cole and Andrew appear on) over at unitedstatesofgeekdom.com

Hey Kids, Comics! #61 - Deconstructing Comics: To Prove a Villain

When we got together to start this show, we didn't want to do a comics review show.  There are a ton of places to get that information.  We set out to do a show that we hadn't heard before, a single topic show about overarching ideas and extrapolated errata, and other nonsense that we so often would kick back and forth.  Quickly we realized that we could, in honor of the comic book practice, do 5 issue "story arcs" on some of the themes that we would put forth.  These often come from a single issue idea, that is followed with one of the team, in a Brian Blessed Bravado, proclaiming that "we can go 5 issues on that. "  Deconstructing Comics was one of those arcs, and this issue stood out from the crop for us, if for no other reason than Cole dropped a bomb shell of a villian on us, that still reverberates around the JCU today.

There you have it, three of our favorite recent episodes.  We invite you to take a listen to all we have to offer at the JCU.  A lot of heart and soul go into all of these shows, and it is reflected in the passion of the stories they tell.  Thank you all for everything you have done for Hey Kids, Comics and The Jedicole Universe, and we will see you next week with a brand spankin' new show!
